Forest Park Ridge Trail Hiking Guide

Forest Park Ridge Trail Hiking guide

This hike through Forest Park offers an outstanding view of the iconic St Johns Bridge in NW Portland. Did you know, Forest Park is the largest urban wilderness in the United States? As such there are numerous trails to explore within Forest Park. According to Portland Monthly Magazine, one of the best trails in the park is the Ridge Trail. Whether you prefer urban hikes or a more peaceful hike through trees, you will experience both along the Ridge Trail. St Johns bridge in Portland Oregon

Parking for this hike is limited to about 6-8 cars near the trailhead. Without other nearby places to park, you will have better luck going early or later in the day to avoid peak trail use. Once you park, follow the Ridge Trail sign for a quick walk along the street. When you come to a set of stairs, begin to climb upwards to the trail.

This is where you will find the best view for taking photos. If you are lucky to hike on a clear day, you might be able to see Mt St Helens and Mt Adams in the distance. Be sure to set your camera’s aperture high enough to capture all those far away details. I had pretty good luck at f11, but I could have bumped it up a touch for even greater depth of field.Dirt trail in Forest Park

About the Trail

For the most part the terrain is level with the exception of a few gnarly root systems. There is a downed log, but it’s pretty easy for adults to climb over. Small children may require some assistance. There are a few up hill sections, but they aren’t very long and you meet up with level terrain soon enough. Even if you aren’t in top shape, you should have no trouble with this hike. The abundance of tall trees provide nice shade, so even on a warm day you won’t feel the sun beating down. Note: There are no restrooms at the trailhead, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly.

In The Area

Make sure to bring along one of these healthy snacks to keep your body fueled. Then, after your hike, head over the St Johns Bridge for a well-deserved bite to eat. We enjoyed the outdoor seating and ambiance the McMenamins St Johns Pub. If you brought your four legged friend along on your hike, you will be happy to know dogs are welcome to eat with you on the outdoor patio.
